Monroe College Overcomes A Double-Digit Halftime Deficit To Defeat BMCC, 62-47

Bronx, New York | The BMCC women's basketball team squandered an 11-point halftime lead in a 62-47 loss to Regional opponent Monroe College on Tuesday night in the Bronx, New York. The loss drops the Panthers to 2-10 (2-8 Region XV), while the Express move to 13-6 (9-2 Region XV) with the victory.

Three BMCC players finished the night in double figures, with sophomore Autum Adams-Edwards (Brooklyn, New York) leading the way with a team-high 19 points, including 10 in the first quarter, to go along with team-best three steals and two assists. Classmate Lauren Malcolm (Bronx, New York) recorded a second straight double-double and her team-leading fourth of the season, bringing down a game-high 12 rebounds and scoring 12 points. At the same time, fellow underclassman Blossom Berruecos (Flushing, NY) chipped in with 11, while freshman Shyasia Preston (Far Rockaway, New York) brought down 11 rebounds in the contest. 

Monroe College jumped out to a 7-2 lead early in the first quarter, before BMCC scored six of the next seven points to tie it at eight on two Adams-Edwards free-throws at the 6:33 mark. After the Express went back in front 10-8, the Panthers grabbed their first lead of the night, 11-10 on an Adams-Edwards three-pointer at 4:46, before completing a 9-0 run over the final 5:48 of the quarter, while holding the hosts scoreless to lead 17-10 after one.

The Express opened the second quarter with a 9-2 run to knot the score up at 19 on a three-pointer at 6:49, and then the Panthers scored six consecutive points - with five points coming from Berruecos (2–2 FT and a three-pointer) - to extend the lead back to 25-19. After Monroe College went 1-for-2 at the line to get the deficit down to five, 25-20, BMCC would close on a 9-3 run to a take their largest lead of the first half, 11, 34-23 into the halftime break. 

After BMCC built their lead to its biggest of the evening, 13, 36-23 on a Malcolm layup at the 8:05 mark of the third quarter, Monroe College went on a 15-2 run over the final 6:17, holding the visitors to 13.3% from the field (2-for-15) and just four points total, to end the third tied at 38. 

The Express carried that momentum into the final stanza and retook the lead 40-38 on a layup nine seconds in, and then got it up to five, 43-38 on three-pointer 45 seconds after. The Panthers got as close as three, 43-40, on an Autum-Edwards layup at 8:50, before the Express took control over the next 5:44 with a 19-3 run to increase their margin to its biggest of the evening, 19, 62-43 and later roll to a 62-47 win.  

Three players scored in double-figures for Monroe College, with freshman guard Quanisha Griffin leading the charge with a team-high 19 points and seven steals. and four assists. Classmate Ramatoulaye Diallo provided 15 points off the bench, while fellow frosh Imoni Beauvais chipped in with 12. Fellow underclassman Destiny Arzy ripped down ten boards in the game. 

Notables: 

  • Autum Adams-Edwards (Brooklyn, New York) recorded three straight double-figure games for the first time since Nov. 19-Nov.23 of 2019. Adams-Edwards leads the Panthers with six double-digit scoring efforts this season. 
  • Classmate Lauren Malcolm (Bronx, New York) is second on the team with five double-digit scoring efforts on the season, while fellow underclassmen Blossom Berruecos (Flushing, NY) put up her third double-figure game of the year and the first since Nov. 23, 2019.
  • Malcolm has recorded double-doubles in back-to-back games and leads BMCC with four double-doubles on the season and eight for her Panther career. She also recorded her third straight double-digit rebound effort while leading the team with nine on the season.
  • Shyasia Preston (Far Rockaway, New York) also has ripped down ten or more rebounds in three straight contests and is second on the team with five double-digit rebounding efforts on the season.
