Bellerose, NY | After two losses to begin the Bronx-BMCC series, the Panthers baseball team entered Monday's afternoon doubleheader with their sights set on snapping a losing skid. BMCC dropped the first half of the doubleheader in a lopside defeat, then in Game 2 they rallied for three runs in the final inning to pull off an improbable comeback and walkoff with a 3-2 victory.
While the offense was slow to get started, with 4 hits and no runs through the first 5 innings, starting pitcher
Juan Martinez had his best performance of the season. The hard throwing lefty allowed just 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 9 batters through a 6 inning complete game. In the bottom half of the 6th inning, the Panthers offense came alive. Three straight singles from
Andys Ventura,
Aidan Blum and
Prospero Perez brought the score to 2-1. After Perez stole second, BMCC had runners on second and third base with two outs in the final inning. Freshman
Diego Rodriguez came up to the plate as a pinch hitter for the Panthers and promptly crushed a line drive opposite field to easily score Blum from third base. The Broncos quickly got the ball in as Perez was rounding third, but the play at the plate was not in time and the Panthers walked off with a win.
The BMCC baseball team will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to New Rochelle to take on the Monroe Express. This Region 15 matchup is set to begin at 4pm.
