Panthers Suffer 87-78 Road Loss At Nassau Community College

Garden City, New York | The BMCC men's basketball team came up short on the road, against Regional opponent Nassau Community College, 87-78, on Saturday afternoon. In defeat, the Panthers fall to 2-2 (1-1 Region XV), while the Lions stay unbeaten at 5-0 (3-0 Region XV) with the victory. 

Two BMCC players recorded double-doubles, as freshman Malik Bentinck (Queens, New York) notched his second of the season with a game-high and career-high 20 points and 16 rebounds while snatching a team-best two steals, tying a team-high. Classmate Shakeem Reid (Brooklyn, New York) registered his first double-double of the year as he grabbed 11 rebounds and chipped in with 12 points. Sophomore Terrance McBride (Brooklyn, New York) dropped 19 points and dished out a team-best seven assists, while freshman Elvys Ceballos (New York City, New York) scored 17 points and tied for a team-high with two steals.

After a competitive first half, Nassau Community College went into halftime with a 36-34 lead. The second half would go back and forth, but the Lions would outscore the Panthers 51-44 in the second half for the 87-78 victory.  

Nassau Community College had four players score in double-figures, as sophomore forward Javen Soto led the way 19 points. Soto also put up a double-double, pulling down a team-best 14 rebounds. Fellow upperclassman Patrick Gardner swatted a team-high five blocks and drained 16 points, while newcomers Qai Kellman posted 14 points, and Sahdique Watkins had 12 points to go along with a team-best three steals. 

Notables: 

  • BMCC dropped their first road contest of the season after winning their first two. The Panthers won their first four road games of the 2018-2019 campaign a year ago. 
  • Malik Bentinck (Queens, New York) has recorded a team-leading two double-doubles in the first four games of the 2019-20 season.
  • Terrance McBride (Brooklyn, New York) and Shakeem Reid (Brooklyn, New York) have scored in double figures in all four contests this season, while Bentick and Elvys Ceballos (New York City, New York) have three double-digit scoring performances in three of their four-game this year.
