New York, New York | After posting a three-game winning streak, with all of the victories against Regional opponents, the BMCC men's soccer team looked to keep on rolling at home on Thursday afternoon. After playing all their home contests at Pier 40 this season, their regular-season finale would take place in Brooklyn, New York, at Kingsborough Athletics Field.
The BMCC men's soccer team ended the 2019 season with a 1-1 draw against Regional opponent Suffolk County Community College. The game ended in the 80th minute due to darkness. With the tie, the Panthers' record goes to 7-2-3 (6-2-2 Region XV), while the Sharks move to 10-6-1 (6-2-1 Region XV).
Both teams played a scoreless opening period as BMCC and Suffolk County Community College both totaled four shots apiece, while the Panthers fired two of their four shots on goal.
The Panthers applied the pressure immediately with three shots (all three on goal) during the first five minutes of the second half. BMCC broke the scoreless tie in the 50th minute when freshman midfielder Michael Konadu (Kwahu, Ghana) split two defenders and placed a lob pass on foot of sophomore midfielder Rajay Officer (Portmore, Jamaica), who lifted into the top left corner of the net.
The Sharks would respond four minutes later when freshman Jevoun McKellar grabbed possession off a broken play in the 54th minute and fed a streaking Emmanuel Kwansah, who rolled it by Panther freshman goalkeeper Apelete Amehon (Kara, Togo (West Africa) to tie the match at one.
The match was quiet for the next 15 minutes before Suffolk fired a point-blank attempt in the penalty area in the 69th minute. BMCC freshman midfielder Seydou Diallo (Brooklyn, New York) also had three quality opportunities in the remaining 11:35 of the second half, when he was denied on two left-footed blasts from outside the penalty area by Shark goalkeeper Bryan Romero and his third shot just missing over the crossbar.
The Panthers dominated the shot total 13-6, and with five of their seven total shots on goal and all two of the Sharks shots on goal coming in the second half. Diallo led BMCC with five shots on the night, including three on goal. For Suffolk, Kwansah, and McKellar both had a game-high two shots with one on goal.
Amehon made one save, while his counterpart, freshman Bryan Romero, had six saves, with four of them coming in the second half.
The Panthers have finished the regular season with a 6-2-2 mark in the Region 15 standings, which currently rank them in fourth place. They could finish as high as third based on a tiebreaker with Westchester, but the final seedings will not be known until the regular season concludes for the other teams.
BMCC has also qualified as the second seed for their fifth consecutive CUNYAC Championship and will face a familiar foe in Queensborough Community College, who defeated them last year, on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at the Metropolitan Oval in Maspeth, New York. The opening kickoff is at 7 p.m. For More information about the 2019 CUNYAC Community College Men's Soccer Championship, please visit www.bmccathletics.com later this week.
