New York, NY | Fans of BMCC basketball got their first look this season at the women's team on Tuesday evening when the Lady Panthers matched up against the Kingsborough Wave in the 2018-19 home opener. In a defensive battle, BMCC recorded 17 steals and 8 blocks while holding the Wave to 9-for-66 (13.6%) from the field to come away with a 42-33 victory in overtime.
With only two returning players from last season's CUNYAC Championship runner-up team, Coach
Eric Almonte relied heavily on freshman players to secure the first collegiate win of his head coaching career. Freshman forward
Awa Fall made the most of her opportunities as she went 4-for-5 from the floor on her way to 10 points while recording 8 rebounds and 5 steals. The offense was led by point guard
Autum Adams-Edwards [7 pts and 7 ast], while shooting guard
Heylin Pimentel poured in 10 points. As the teams fought hard for every possession, the Lady Panthers were able to outrebound the Wave by a large margin with contributions from sophomore
Casey Ferenc [9 reb] and freshman
Naya Verley [8 reb].
Following the win, the women's basketball team will be back in action on their home court this Thursday when they face off against the Brookdale Jersey Blues. Tip off is set for 5:30 pm.
