Bayside, NY | The men's and women's basketball teams traveled to Queens to take on the Tigers late Tuesday night. With a win, the men's team would clinch a spot in the CUNYAC playoffs, but with a loss they could be eliminated entirely. In a hard-fought battle between the conference foes with a playoff spot on the line, the Panthers rose to the occasion and came out on top with a 90-81 victory. Meanwhile, the women's team coasted to a 77-42 victory over the Lady Tigers to finish the season with a 7-3 record in the conference and clinch the #2 seed in the CUNYAC tournament.
BMCC women's basketball team, led by
Natalija Dubrovina's 23 point performance, blew past the 2-8 Lady Tigers to earn home-court advantage in the opening round of the postseason. Sophomore
Dashka Fonrose had a breakout game for BMCC with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists while shooting 8-for-19 (.471) from the floor . The Lady Panthers 7-3 record in the CUNY Athletic Conference this season matches the win total set by the 2012-13 conference championship team. This marks the second playoff appearance in two years for Head Coach Ben Newberg, who has led the team to a 15-5 overall record following his first full offseason of recruiting. After securing the #2 seed in CUNY, the Lady Panthers will have little time to celebrate before turning their attention towards the opening round of playoffs next week. BMCC will take on LaGuardia at 6pm on Tuesday night, with the winner advancing to the tournament finals.
The Panthers brought their conference record to 5-5 after the trio of
Jason Mejia (26 points),
George Keener(23 points) and Melvin Collins(18 points) erupted against the Tigers. In his first season with the team, Head Coach
Tommy Guerin has led his team to a 12-10 record and playoff berth in the CUNYAC and Regional tournament. The men's team will have to wait for the outcome of tomorrow night's Hostos vs Bronx game to determine seeding and their first round opponent.
