Weekend Recap: Men’s Soccer soars to new heights in weekly NJCAA top 10 poll

Valhalla, NY | Following blowout victories over Dutchess and Westchester, the Panthers received recognition from the Men's Soccer Coaches Association. With an unblemished 9-0 record during the 2017 campaign, the BMCC men's soccer team earned the 8th spot in the weekly NJCAA Division III poll. Elsewhere this weekend, the volleyball team split a doubleheader at BMCC Gymnasium with a win over the Kingsborough Wave followed by a 5-set defeat against the region-leading Queensborough Tigers, while the women's soccer team came up short against the FIT Tigers.

For the fourth time this season, the Panthers held their opponent scoreless as they piled on goal after goal in a 7-0 win over Westchester. The Vikings had no answer for Brando Guzman, the Panthers midfielder recorded a hat trick with three goals coming in the first 35 minutes of play. Manhattan's leading goal scorer added onto his total with a goal in the first half to give the Panthers a 4-0 lead entering halftime. Sophomore Aboubacar Keita recorded a pair of assists on goals from Lucas Musse and Derrick Opoku, then left back Daniel Munoz finished the scoring with an unassisted goal, for his second goal of the season.

The women's volleyball team was close to handing the Queensborough Tigers their first regional loss of the season, Lady Panthers' freshmen Sara Lazo and Jennifer Chacon pushed the team to a 2-1 set lead with their outstanding play, but the team could not close the door on the Tigers, allowing them to sneak away with their 12th consecutive win in Region 15 matches. Chacon finished the match with a team high 24 assists and 8 aces, and Lazo matched her season high of 14 kills to go along with 7 digs and 3 aces. During the four-set victory over the Wave, Stela Vaso led the team with 17 kills, while Jasmine Vidal was a huge factor on defense with 20 digs.

The Lady Panthers soccer team fell to the FIT Tigers by a final score of 3-0. With a 3-6 record in the region, BMCC will face an uphill battle to earn a spot in the Region 15 playoffs.

All of the BMCC athletics teams will be in action this week, with the women's soccer playing Suffolk on Tuesday, followed by Monroe (Bronx Campus) and Kingsborough on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Men's Soccer will face their final test of the regular season on Wednesday when they take on the Suffolk Sharks in Brooklyn. The women's volleyball team squares off against the Dutchess Falcons and Monroe Express in a weekend doubleheader in Poughkeepsie, NY.
