Selden, NY | Following a week of rest, the Lady Panthers traveled out to Long Island on Saturday for a tough doubleheader against the Nassau Lions and Suffolk Sharks. BMCC began with a difficult matchup against the reigning Region XV champion Lions, a team that beat the Lady Panthers in straight sets last year. Next up they faced the Suffolk Sharks, a team that currently sits at the top of the
Region XV standings for 2016. The Lady Panthers would leave with a 3-1 victory over Nassau, and a narrow 2-3 defeat against Suffolk to prove they are going to be a top contender in the region this season.
In the win against Nassau, the pair of
Stela Vaso and
Kayshawna Richardson once again led the way for the Lady Panthers both on offense and defense. Vaso finished with an impressive 10 kills, 7 blocks, 7 digs, and 2 aces, while Richardson ended the match with 9 kills and 4 blocks. Meanwhile setter
Crisneysi Mejia facilitated the offense by providing her teammates with a season-high 20 assists.
During the second half of the doubleheader, the Sharks played a high tempo game as they kept the pressure on BMCC with their aggressive offense. The Lady Panthers responded with stellar defending led by
Jasmin Vidal and
Kimberly Mejia, who would finish the match with 11 and 8 digs, respectively. Vaso tallied 7 kills and 4 aces, while
Crisneysi Mejia continued to perform well that afternoon with another 15 assists.
After navigating through a tough stretch in their schedule, the Lady Panthers will have some time off before they return to action on Thursday to take on their CUNYAC opponent the Bronx Broncos.
