Panthers Win in Overtime to Advance to CUNY Finals

New York, NY | In the semifinal round of the CUNY Athletic Conference tournament, the men's basketball team was matched up against the Bronx Broncos, a team they have become familiar with over the past two season, with tonight's game marking their 7th meeting during that span. After the Panthers swept the Broncos in the 2014-15 season, the teams split the regular season series this year, with each team getting a victory at home.

The game started out as a back and forth battle with neither team able to gain an advantage until a Neil Veira three pointer gave the Panthers a 16-10 lead. A few possessions later, Jonathan Jones picked off a BCC pass and took it down the court for an emphatic slam dunk to push the lead to 7 points. Bronx would keep their composure and rally back to tie the score at 25-25. With momentum on their side, the Broncos went up 35-31 before BMCC scored 5 unanswered points to end the half with a slight lead. Brandon Williams led all scorers with 13 as the Panthers held a 36-35 lead at halftime.

The second half got off to a similar start, with both teams locking down on defense it proved difficult for either side to find a quality shot. A few minutes into the half, the Broncos began to connect on their shots to go on a 20-9 run. Despite the slow start, the Panthers would continue to fight, and a pair of Dominek Tucker layups would cut the deficit down to five points with 7 minutes remaining in the game.

In the final minutes of play, a driving layup from Matthew Boyd would tie the game at 70 with 1:30 left on the clock. Trailing by 1 with under a minute remaining, Tucker came up with a huge steal but the Panthers were unable to capitalize as they came up empty on the next possession. The Broncos would sink a pair of free throws to make it a 3 point game with 13 seconds remaining. During the timeout, head coach Nolan Adams designed a play to get the ball to Jamel Harris, the play worked to perfection as the team captain drained a contested three to even the score at 75-75 at the end of regulation.

BMCC came out strong in overtime, jumping out to a 6 point lead following a layup-and-1 and a string of foul shots from Boyd. The Panthers continued to extend the lead in the final seconds to come away with an 89-81 victory and a berth in the CUNY Championship.

With the win, the Panthers will take on the LaGuardia Red Hawks in the championship game on Friday night. Tipoff is set for 8:30pm, following the conclusion of the Bronx-LaGuardia Women's final.
