BMCC, who entered the day on a 10 game winning streak and fresh off a 3-0 victory over Nassau Community College in the Regional semi-finals, was looking to avenge their lone defeat of the season which saw the Sharks defeat the Panthers 2-0 on September 12th. BMCC looked to there sophomore All-American nominations Kevin Romero(El Salvador), Klaudio Shala(Albania) and Anton Wesener(Italy) for veteran leadership as both teams searched for the opening goal of the game. The Panthers registered 5 shots with 2 getting on goal, all by their All-American nomination trio, in the first half but couldn't find the back of the net. The Sharks also put two shots on goal in the first half both of which were stopped by Panthers goalkeeper Irvin Barreto(Freshman, Mexico City) and the two teams headed into the half all tied at 0. The second half was more of the same as both teams battled for possession of the ball as each side looked to mount an offensive attack. The game remained scoreless until the 69th minute when Sharks midfielder Ryan Murphy assisted Ron Pressley for the first goal of the game and a Sharks 1-0. With 21 minutes remaining in regulation it was now time for the Panthers to assert their will and look for the equalizer. Panthers coach Afrim Lajqi implored his team to not give up and remain aggressive as they had been this whole season. The Panthers responded by pressing the ball up the field and drawing a foul on the Sharks from just outside the box in the 78th minute. Klaudio Shala stepped up to the ball for the Panthers and drove the free kick past the Sharks goalkeeper to tie up the game at 1-1 with 12 minutes to play. Once the clock read triple zeroes it was time for overtime where a golden goal could decide the fate of the Panthers season. Both teams played stout defense in the overtime sessions with the Panthers best opportunity to score coming in the 2nd overtime as Anton Wesener attempted to score the game-winning goal off a corner kick from Klaudio Shala but the shot went just wide. The second overtime ended just the same as regulation had ended with both teams still tied at 1 a piece. With the game still tied after two overtimes, the Regional Championship would come down to penalty kicks. BMCC saw their season end just shy of a National Championship appearance as the Sharks were able to defeat the Panthers 4-1 in penalty kicks. Print Friendly Version
